The Art of Hospitality

Hebrews 13:2 says, “Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it!”

My husband and I have been members of C*Road Church for a long time, but I still remember walking through those front doors for the first time and feeling pretty nervous. It’s a big church, and if I’m being completely honest it took a while for us to feel like we belonged.

Just as Jesus made space for us in His family, we are called to make space for others, especially those who are new to our community. Romans 15:7 says, “Therefore, welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.” This verse reminds us that the church is not just a gathering of familiar faces - it’s a place of welcome for all.

It's easy to fall into the routine of church, gravitating toward people we already know. But Jesus’ example teaches us to be intentional in noticing those who might feel out of place or a little unsure. A friendly smile and hello, inviting someone to sit with you, or an invitation for coffee or lunch can make all the difference to someone new to the church.

As we go about our Sunday routines, let’s ask God to open our eyes to see the people we might otherwise overlook. Let’s be mindful of the new faces and take the first step to show them the love and hospitality of Christ.
